Plastic Guitar Graveyard

22 09 2008

This is where your plastic guitar throw-aways go to die… It’s like a damn graveyard for the shit!

Seemed like a good idea at the time … ladies

10 07 2008

Remember my great idea of posting everything I do every week? Well, that didn’t pan out. The thing about writing at a blog for 5+ days a week means you don’t really want to look at another blog on your off time!

It’s like when I worked as a manager for EB Games. You are surrounded by videogames and sometimes you need a book or a movie.

Speaking of which. Right now I’m reading a couple of books. Top of the list is “Don’t Get Too Comfortable” by David Rakoff. Rakoff is a newly christened American after living in the States as a visiting Canadian for nearly twenty years. The book is a funny look on the process of being an American.

Also on the list is “When You Are Engulfed in Flames” by David Sedaris. Haven’t really dived into that one enough to talk about it but it is notable that Sedaris moved to to the Far East to write it and to quit smoking. Yes, moved half way across the globe to quit smoking! I should do that myself.

BigCast 003 is pretty entertaining, if only because it was a total clusterf***! I was hella tired and stressed out during recording. The entertaining parts will be the outtakes and the bonus chapter I’m planning on including which saw Akela, Kyle and I jaw on about comics. Fun stuff.

Bought a brand spanking new MacBook. Pimp as shit.

The X3F Fancast Friends group on Facebook has some hilarious photoshops of me and the guys. Props to Richard Elliot. For some reason the group isn’t allowing images to be uploaded anymore, but Rich is looking into it. No, it wasn’t disabled by any of us!

E3 is next week. Scary stuff for me personally as it’s the first E3 I’ll be really entrenched in. I won’t be there but with Rich and Dustin gone it’s up to Terrence and myself to get things done.

It goes without saying but the Fancast is going to be a little odd this week. It’s going to be Rich, Dustin and Alexander talking about E3 on a nightly basis. As for Terrence and I … wait and see!

I’d keep writing but I have work to do and need to go buy Civilization Revolution!!!!!

Xav’s Ten Metal Gear Solid 4 Realizations

14 06 2008

Firstly. No, there will be no spoilers here.

Secondly, after and epic two day playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on PS3 (for both professional and personal reasons) there are a few little things I picked up on that I just thought were cool, interesting and/or shitty about the epic adventure.

  1. Shaking your PS3 controller will clear Snake’s OctoCamo memory and revert back to its normal black color
  2. The four main gimmick henchmen in Metal Gear Solid (from PS1) were; Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf, Decoy Octopus and Vulcan Raven. In Metal Gear Solid 4 the four main gimmick henchwomen are Screaming Mantis, Crying Wolf, Laughing Octopus and Raging Raven. Interesting… 🙂
  3. Holding the Triangle button when prone will make Snake fake death, helpful in an attempt to go undetected in certain situations
  4. The Blu-ray promo within the game is very specifically tied to the Metal Gear Solid universe and really is not a shot at the Xbox 360 as many have claimed it to be
  5. Snake making fun of old game conventions found in previous Metal Gear games; such as key cards
  6. The beginning of the third act (in gameplay) is mind-numbingly boring but the second part of it turns out to be one of the best sections in the game
  7. The multiple appearances of the now classic HIDEO-1 gag
  8. After locating the hidden camera, busting it out and using it during the end of B&B fights switches the game to a random studio mode in the vein of the Mei Ling photoshoot mode from previous titles
  9. The scariest enemy in the game is not the Gekko, or any of the boss characters. It’s those stupid scanner drones that are spheres with multiple arms and are about two feet high. When they attack, they attack in full force. Also, they suck and can fall in a well and die.
  10. In the voice cast credits of the game, Hideo Kojima is listed as the voice of God

“What I learned about reviews, MGS4 and Edge” by Xav de Matos.

11 06 2008
  • 8 out of 10 is like saying you’d rather shit yourself in line for a movie than make love to a beautiful woman
  • Roger Ebert expresses his feelings too much
  • The Garfield movie, while disappointing, can be an enjoyable experience for some
    All fanboy idiots are Republicans
  • An 8 represents a conspiracy, fiasco and/or mass payoffs from a competitor’s console manufacturer
  • Without a 10 out of 10 some fanboys cannot live and thus may kill themselves
  • Without a detailed breakdown of each lost point from a review, the review cannot stand and thus is only down-scoring the game too appear unbiased
  • If an outlet gives an unexpected score they are officially deemed a poor company to follow and can no longer be trusted
  • Giving MGS4 an 8 is to increase credibility of a reviewer or outlet for giving Halo, GTAIV and Super Mario Galaxy better scores–and while MGS4 is not available yet, it is infinitely better than all games combined
  • Games considered to be system sellers must be scored between 9-9.9 and can never get a score lower

These ridiculous points and more can be found at regarding the Edge 8/10 score of Metal Gear Solid 4. When did an 8/10 turn into a bad score? I think people might be getting a little crazy for the game not getting perfect 10s across the board.

A few days late but here’s what I did last week.

Xbox 360 Fanboy (Xav Links)

Big Download (Xav Links)

Due to a ton of editorial and video features on both sites I was in ghost mode at Big Download.

Who is Jeremy Bentham?

30 05 2008

By now Lost fans have already seen the season four finale that ran last night. After a year, they’ve finally revealed the person inside the coffin. In order to keep leaks from happening around the set, the Lost producers actually shot three versions of the coffin reveal.

This video from Good Morning America shows off the two fake reveals, but they do say who was in the coffin for real. So, DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU DON’T WANT LOST SPOILED FOR YOU! This video is SPOILER HEAVY!!

Xav in Review May 18-24

25 05 2008

Here are the stories I worked on from May 18-24. Been a busy week outside of work so I haven’t done as much as I would have liked to, but still 37 stories ain’t bad.

Xbox 360 Fanboy (Xav Links)

Big Download (Xav Links)

Slower week than usual this week, but I expect a surge of work to hit me this upcoming week. I’m going to try to shoot out a regular blog post asap as this seems to be the only thing I’m writing here these days!
